“We had been talking about doing Benjamin Button long before Babel and actually before The Fountain. Because Cate was originally gonna do The Fountain with Brad. As my movie would fall apart, somebody would say, “Hey, did you hear? Brad’s doing this movie with Darren Aronofsky…” And I’d say, “Oh, Great!” then “…Yeah, with Cate Blanchett.” and I’d be like… (grrrrr). Then that would fall apart…and I’m sorry about that Darren…but, gleefully. And then came Babel. Which when I saw I didn’t think was treading anywhere near the area of Benjamin Button. They’re wonderful together. They’re just so easy. The “feeling out” process was way over. So in that way, I was glad they were in Babel.
